Hi, Pat!
Apparently the incident with the Spanish passenger vessel really did happen. That IWO was invited to join a different crew, which he did, and I can't remember right now whether he survived the war or not. His self-righteousness may have been fictional, but I guess his basic dorkiness (for want of a better word) was not!
By all accounts, the actor (Hubertus Bengsch) is a very nice guy. Even Buchheim liked him!
