A ridiculous price for a film that is probably in the National Archives of the U.S. Buying on eBay is chancy, especially when it comes to film prints. When U-505 was captured in the spring of 1944, I doubt the Guadalcanal group had suffecient film resources to shoot more than a few minutes of footage. It is possible that the Navy Wildcats that hedgehogged the boat shot gun cam footage, but the load on a gun cam was no more tnan 100 ft. In conclusion, the U-505 was surrendered when its crew abandoned it after being strafed by 50 cals. The best description of the "capture" is in Ladislas Farago's Tenth Fleet. On the editing of film: the Defense department of the U.S. sometimes used scenes that were simular to the actual occurance but were not shot at the event. Television film
"editors" are notorious for doing this. In one program on a military channel, the invasion of Iwo Jima was depticted using beachhead footage with palm trees in the background!
