Well, I'm going in part on what Io had to say (and I'd never doubted it myself). I think she told me that that incident was the reason Groth was let go from the U96 crew.
Buchheim's movie script, which of course wasn't used, has this incident as the major crisis of the story. In this, der Alte goes through a time of great mental anguish, thinking about what might have happened. It would be odd if Buchheim borrowed the story from another boat's experience, since almost everything else he wrote was taken from his time on U96.
Oddly enough, there is no Buchheim character (no war-correspondent) in his film script!
