<HTML>I was surprised to learn a while ago that Captain von Trapp of \"The Sound of Music\" fame, was a submarine commander in the First World War. My sources (an A & E biography on the von Trapp family and a book by Antony Preston, titled \"Submarine\") mentioned the fact of his service, but said little about it. Does anyone know any more?
The A & E biography said that he suffered from lung diseases in his later years because of the diesel fumes on board his submarine. Is this common in submariners of the two wars?
Thanks for anything you may know.</HTML>
