Yes. I really like it but I stopped reading for a while as I'm struggling with it. I'm Dutch and my German is very rusty plus I'm not familiar with a lot of naval terms.

ETA: Sintrupvej basically translate as Sintrup Road. Admit that I am now rather intrigued as to where to find the mythical town/village of Sintrup.

Correcting myself here: Sintrup is too far north to ever have been part of Germany. Sorry.

As said, the border between Germany and Denmark was a flexible one so Sintrup might well have been part of Germany in the year of Nissens birth. But I haven't been able to find a historic map yet so don't pin me down on that. ;-)

Thanks for these links. Esp. with the second clip, it's interesting to see the difference in how Doenitz and Speer view their roles and responsibilities.

Be patient? Mail may be slow plus it's the summer, so I wouldn't be surprised if there's less staff around because of vacations. I'd wait for a week or 2 and if you still haven't heard anything then maybe send an inquiring e-mail?

Strange why? Because it's in Denmark? The German-Danish border used to be rather flexible, but I'm not sure about where it was in 1916.

According to Google maps, there's a Sintrupvej, just west of Aarhus (Denmark). Other then that... no idea, sorry.

I'd have to rewatch to be 100% sure but I think you're right in that a Christmas cake is a fruit cake. I wouldn't be surprised if the white powdered ones are the same cakes covered with icing sugare.

Is there any information as to where the torpedoes were produced and by whom? I mean, if they were made by people who were forced to work for the Germans, it seems only logical that there would be some sabotage.

Don't think it's necessarily a copy. It means that the piece was made in Germany and has a patented design. The marking "gesch" by itself typically signifies that a piece has patent rights reserved. (source: )

found that GES GESCH means Gesetzlich Geschutzt. Or in English: legally protected, patented, copyrighted

Based on what I read Buchheim's Das Boot - there was quite some sabotage going on when producing torpedos.

Was it ever made clear who was the inspiration for Captain Thomsen or was he a made up character based on various people?

Via Das Boot I've become fascinated with German's uboat warfare. Even up to a point that I did a presentation on Operation Paukenschlag for my American Studies course in university. I've also watched some good documentaries on German tv. So I now know a bit of what went on but could someone help me on finding a good book that explains more about the various routes the uboats travel

oh! I forgot that I also have the soundtrack. It was back in the 1990s when the U-96 song actually got me curious about the movie. I really love the soundtrack but I stopped listening to it whilst trying to get to sleep. It happened a couple of times that I drifted of to sleep listening to the quiet guitar music of "Erinnerung" only to bolt up wide awake because Der Alte roars "

I used to own three versions of Das Boot: the director's cut, the superbit (which I gave away) and the tv-series. I don't watch it as often as some of you guys but the last time I watched it was 4-5 May and that was out of protest. I also read the book again. I have the Dutch translation which I found when an acquantance cleared out her book shelves. It's not my favorite read t

Hi Daniel, Firstly, I"m dutch so no real expert on how to retrieve information about German history but in Holland pretty much every town/village has its own historical society. However, after a quick wiki-search on Königsberg, I found this photo of Königsberg city center in 1949 (http://www.kng750.kanet.ru/list000.htm) which leaves me to wonder whether there were any archives left at a
