I read today in the Commander File about Oskar-Heinz Kush, the commander who was shot for alledged sedition after being denounced by his IWO, Dr Abel. The captain had earlier given him a report that he wasn't fit for command. On searching for Dr Abel I found that when he did get his own command the boat was lost on the first day at sea. Nothing is known about the loss. While I am in

How did Rambo get in there? I agree Das Boot could have been further up, though Saving Private is a very good film. Patton as mentioned above is another marvellous movie. I suppose as Das Boot was made a while ago films have become more graphic over recent years. If you missed Band of Brothers you really missed something. I expect as it was a mini series rather than a movie that m

I saw a close up picture recently of the turret on this boat. It makes you wonder how she managed stay upright when they fired one of those guns. I know it was a big boat but the whole idea is incredible. I cannot imagine they ever fired a salvo.

There is a book in my local library about this ship, oddly enough called "We will stand by you". I can't remember the authors name but he was a radio operator on board the ship and also a plank owner. It would be on Alibris or one of those book websites, no doubt. It has a number of photographs but I don't know if the one you need is in there. A good book anyway.

I started reading a book recently from the local library about HMS Gloucester. The Fighting G I think it may be called. It was written by the son of a Chief Petty Officer, who was lost with the ship I believe. Anyway I haven't got far but it is a good book and will no doubt cover the ship's loss.

This may not be of much use, I have read a book about HMS Electra. I think it was actually written by another author, on the memories of a member of the ship's company. You can tell as you read it it isn't first hand. Starts a bit like a novel. I can't remember the name either, but I expect it has pictures. Written some years ago.

Some more modern diesel boats used two ballast tanks as fuel tanks, in the manner described above. It will be interesting to know about U boats. Sounds like a good book.

There is a submarine in a Maritime Museum near me, not a U Boat, which has that sort of weathering just from recent weeks of heavy rain. It's alongside and hasn't gone anyway for some years, except for the occasional docking.

There is an account of her loss in the Submariners Association Barrow Branch website.

David W, Can I ask what the book is that you wrote and refer to above? Also, with regard to the fuelling mentioned above, at Kola Inlet I expect the oiler would have been at anchor. So with the fuelling, assuming sufficient hoses were held for four ships at once, this must have been done perhaps two ships abreast, each side. I believe fuelling at sea was still in it's infancy in t
