Also, with regard to the fuelling mentioned above, at Kola Inlet I expect the oiler would have been at anchor. So with the fuelling, assuming sufficient hoses were held for four ships at once, this must have been done perhaps two ships abreast, each side.

I believe fuelling at sea was still in it's infancy in the second world war, first begun by the Americans, using stern fuelling, one ship at a time? I think I read this was first practiced in the Pacific?
