Many thanks. The Tenth Fleet Convoy Routing File for AS 4 in the US National Archives includes a message reporting that a PBY was claiming to have damaged the U-boat. best, david isby

On 16 July 1942, 500 miles north of the Virgin Islands, the U-161, under Korvettenkapitan Albrecht Achilles, torpedoed and sank, in daylight, the US transport SS Fairport as part of fast Convoy AS 4 (America-Suez). I will have to recheck the logbooks for a more precise position, but the convoy had only left Liverpool earlier that day or late the day before so it would have to be fairly close. thanks, david isby

On 16 August 1918, the Queenstown-based US destroyers Downes, Sterrett and Paulding and the British airship SS.Z.16, escorting convoy CL 29 outward bound from Liverpool, prosecuted a submarine contact in the Irish Sea and were considered to have "probably damaged? a U-boat. Is there any evidence from the German side of an actual U-boat being involved in this action? thanks, David Isby
