2. Why ??
Good afternoon all, Could someone explain to me the point of re-running the "Truth about Das Boot" thread ? Stu, the guy who stared it was, if I may say so, a rather strange young chap who claimed, among other things, that he had a school friend who came to high school wearing a German uniform and sporting a Knights Cross. He also said his Grandfather ?? was torpedoed while on a Hosp

Good evening everyone, Not u-boat but interesting I think. Featured on BBC Radio 4 yesterday was a fascinating item on Germans who in WW11, faught on the side of the Allies. In all there were 10,000 of these "Soldiers of Conscience", and I must say I was surprised that the number was so large. In order for them to sign up they had to adopt English names and give false details of n

Good evening Eric, Sounds wonderful. I visited U-505 in 1989 when the old set-up was in place and while the format used did not show her off to her best advantage, it was great to be on board such an historic fighting boat. I think a return visit to "The Windy City" might be on the cards. Do Chara Barry

Good afternoon Peter, Just to give an idea of how often this topic comes up... use the Search function on this site and type in something like "U-boats Ireland" and you'll get the picture. I accept that on the face of it it seems logical that with Ireland's history, we would be sympathetic to anyone's cause as long as that cause was against perfidious Albion, this ho

Hi Peter, Sorry that you feel badly treated here. What you may not realise is that this tiresome topic comes up again and again and speaking personally my heart sinks whenever it crops up. I'm just fed up having to defend my fellow countrymen against this insulting and totally unsubstantiated assertion. This forum is populated by intelligent, knowledgeable people who are always ready t

Good evening all. Does anyone recognise this book "U-Boote Contre Les Marines Alliees' by Wolfgang Frank ? I picked up a very bedraggled copy in a flea market in Portugal a few years ago and only rediscovered it today. It has some interesting, and for me, new photos.(It's in French) I've promised it to a French friend as I don't speak the language so it's wasted

Good morning everyone, Irish national radio reported this morning that a diver has lost his life while surveying the wreck of U-778. Details are scant but apparantly he was part of a diving team filming the wreck as part of the project by Derry City Council to raise her when he got into difficulties. His colleagues immediately went to his assistance but he sadly died at the wreck. I'

Good mornng everyone, From the Bournemouth Evening Echo. Mrs Irene Graham of Thorpe Avenue Boscombe delighted the audience with her reminiscence of the German Prisoner of War who was sent to tend her garden. He was repatriated at the end of 1945, she recalled. "He'd always seemed a nice friendly chap, but when the Crocuses came up in the middle of our lawn in February 1946 they spelt

Good morning Geoffrey, Walker's report to the Admiralty on the sinking of U-574: "The U-Boat appeared to be turning continuously to port just inside 'Stork's turning circle. I kept her illuminated with Snowflake flares and fired with the 4-inch guns until they could not be sufficiently depressed... Bursts of machine gun fire were let off when they could be brought to bear,

Hi all, Are you sure it's Nazi Fellowship" ? I always thought it was 'Lasting Fellowship". I'd be surprised if having shown the germans in a sympathetic light they would blow it all with such a line, especially as the skipper made no secret of the fact he was no Hitler lover. Do Chara Barry

Good evening everyone, U-361 (Oblt Hans Seidal) was sunk on 17 July 1944 by a Catalina piloted by Flying Officer J.A Cruickshank. FO Cruickshank was badly wounded in the action as were members of his crew. Despite his injuries he managed to get his aircraft home. For his gallantry he was awarded the Victoria Cross. This got me to thinking... Were there any other VCs' awarded for action
