Charlotte, It looks like thier site was changed again since my last post. Go Here: Click on "Resources" from the top tool bar and select 'Completed Programs' from the drop down. Scroll down to the bottom of the list untilo you find "2003 U-166". Viola. Also, for crew list info try the excellent: Type in "166" in the "U-Bootnr.:

L.A., In addition to Ken's suggestion; (with an O) is still an active site, they've just moved on with other projects. The U-166/Robert E. Lee project was back in the 2001-2004 timeframe. The information appears to be still on the site, just buried somewhat. From the home page, click on 'Programs' from the top toolbar, then click on 'Previous Programs' fro

Rainer, Agreed, no doubt U-564 (Suhren) sank Ohioan for the points you made plus the matches to survivor statements. But since the engagement was so brief (Ohioan sank in less than two minutes, before Suhren could even conduct his periscope sweep) and neither side was able to identify each other at the time, someone else would have had to connect the dots later. Do we know if the identif

Hello, Does anyone know when Suhren was officially linked to the Ohioan attack in Allied or German records, or any indication he ever knew her name? The encounter was so brief that he had no opportunity to determine anything beyond estimated tonnage. Didn't warrant a mention in 'Ace of Aces' and therfore I assume 'Nasses Eichenlaub'. Thanks.

John, Have you tried the BDU KTB's on Jerry & Charla Mason's uboatarchive.net yet? From a cursory look it appears most were intended to go to Norway as one might expect, although they weren't very specific on which base. Some were simply given an operational area to head for and met their end there or along the way. The second half of the month (2nd link) pr

Mark, Thank you. The crew size still seems quite large even by that standard, but I guess it makes sense as far as the coal handling. I found the actual crew list on Ancestry.com this morning for when she arrived in NY in February. The Lascar seamen were noted as 'East Indian' and were noted as British Nationals. Most of these men had signed on in Calcutta around June 22nd, 1942.

All, While reviewing U-172's attacks, the City of Pretoria on March 4th, 1943 kind of jumped out at me. She was carrying explosives and per the the KTB passage posted by KPP 8 years ago: "06h59 triple shot tube I,III,IV: 3 G7e, depths 4m, vg=16, l left bow 104, dispersion 130m, E=1000m 1rst hit after 1 min 40 sec=1550m under the stern, short explosion light, then 2nd hit afte

All, I'm curious whether anyone here that has read Plottke's book (Fächer Loos! U 172 Im Einsatz (ISBN: 3790905100 / 3-7909-0510-0)) can tell me if it describes the sinking of the SS Alaskan in any detail and if the photos all relate to this patrol, and if so, any specifically to the Alaskan. Thanks!

All, I noticed while looking into Fritz Poske that there seems to be quite a gap in his assignments/postings bewteen his class graduation in 1923 (Reichsmarine) and his first assignments/postings under the Kreigsmarine. His rank history is there, but not his assignments. Is this assignment info simply not available for this time period? Does anyone have this info on Poske or know where

Akerberg, Thank you. I saw this photo on the Bundesarchiv picture database. They have 3 photos from April 1942, which would be right after they returned from their Florida patrol, and another 3 from August 19th as they were heading out on their 4th patrol, this time to South Africa. Both sets show the wappen in your photo, which seems rather substantial compared to most. Either a wood ca

Hello, I'm curious about a couple things relating to Fritz Poske (U-504). 1. Does anyone know the reasoning behind the crocodile/alligator emblem for the boat? 2. Has anyone here read his post-war book: Der Seegrenzschutz 1951–1956. Erinnerung – Bericht – Dokumentation , Koblenz/Bonn, 1982. ISBN 3-7637-5410-5. If so, was this just a dry operational overview of his involvement in dev

Barinasboy, Thank you. A sad affair indeed. (And young Ney, can you imagine becoming a U-Boat Commader at 22?) Youngest lost. Not that Scholz was an old man at 25. Are you still in contact with Herr Euteneur? Any issues with my using his father's letter on my site? Scholz was the T.O. on the SS Alaskan attack and I would like to include a brief bio on him (As well as Carl Emmermann

Hello, Looking for additional information on Oblt. Heinz-Günther Scholz of U-283. There were a series of posts 9 years ago on the German language forum, but for whatever reason the search results are substituting a lot of odd characters or I might have attempted to translate. It appears he died while a new commander of U-283 training with the 8th flotille. Cause of death was Suicide acco

Hello, Researching a Merchant Marine captain, I came across a story that he had served on an American 4-Masted Bark named the Manga Reva (ex Pyrenees). The final fate of the vessel was decribed as "at the outbreak of World War I she was returned to service carrying wartime cargoes of grain and case oil to ports in Europe and Africa. On November 19,1916, on a voyage from London to Hampt

Hello, I have a couple questions on U-582's patrols. 1. Her first sailing does not seem to be considered her first war patrol, but I'm wondering if it should, even though it may have been an aborted attempt. The facts seem to agree that they departed Kiel December 20th, 1941 and arrived in Trondheim on December 29th. Two bits of information I've come across seem to ind

Hello, Please bear with me, first some background: I've been working on a brief biography of an American Master named Charles Bamforth who was Master of the Honolulan when she was sunk in July of 1942. Bamforth had also served as a junior officer on several American-Hawaiian operated steamers during WWI, including Californian, West Eagle, & West Hampton, which he details quite e

John, Thanks. So it sounds possible. In the mean-time I found more evidence linking the photos to U-582 on Jerry Mason's uboatarchive.net site. On his page for the interrogation of the survivors of U-203 here: Towards the end under the heading 'OTHER U-BOATS' on page 4 it describes U-582 and on page 5 states: "U-582 left on the fourth cruise late in June, 1942

John, Thanks. You may very well be right. I wasn't sure how common these 'ride alongs' were or to what level they were documented. They appear to have given these correspondents some rudimentary military training and an officers rank, so I thought there might be a chance they ended up on the crew list. Looks like the 1st Flotilla was in transition during this patrol as well,

Paul, Thanks for the suggestion. The original identification of Schulte on the cover of Hamburger Illustreite was done by Roland Berr at Ubootwaffe.net forum in November of 2006. I have reached out to him directly to verify how he made the identification, and I'm awaiting a response. I also e-mailed Hubertus, the crew list expert to see if there is any mention of the reporter there.

Just to clarify: looking for the war correspondent info on U-582's 4th voyage, which was officially her 3rd war patrol from 22 June 1942 to 11 August 1942. Honolulan's Master Bamforth describes seeing man with movie camera emerge from U-582 when it surfaced after the attack to question survivors, and image of Schulte and his L.I. Cords on bridge of U-582 after Port Hunter attack may

Rainer, I missed the controversy and just passed it along in case someone here was interested in this particular vessel and/or U-boat. I found the level of preservation on this deep water wreck interesting for my own reasons. It's terrible how these stories get twisted around from one telling to the next. They need to read Ken's excellent article: If I may make a suggestion

All, I have a few questions concerning U-582 and Werner Schulte: 1. Has anyone come across any explanation for the boat's poor performance on her third patrol which was off the US East Coast in April of 1942? This was generally a period of great success for the ubootwaffe, but other than spotting a neutral Portuguese steamer and a failed triple shot at a fast passenger ship they came up
