Before she was CVE-28 Chenango, AO-31 Chenango reported seeing a U-boat "awash" at 30-59 N 81-04 W shortly after midnight on January 28th, 1942. This appears to be off the border between the US States of Georgia and Florida: The only mention I can find of "Chenango" is an older (1918) merchant vessel so I apologize if this has been covered elsewhere.
