I should mention that the helmet was obtained via a relative of Ullmann in 2010 in Cottbus, Germany, where I presume he was residing. Unfortunately no attempt was made at that time to follow up on the history, and I am having trouble finding any information about anyone in his age group that may have passed away in the interim in that town. Maritime Kriegsmarine maps that came with the helmet are

Thank you all for your helpful replies. As far as I know, this individual was still alive in 2009/2010. Also, he may have advanced in rank after he put his name in his helmet. I have gone into the historisches marinearchiv (https://www.historisches-marinearchiv.de/index.php) and found several personnel named Ullmann. Most did not survive the war, or were not officers (or no rank given).

Thank you. No luck there. However, I was able to search on the name Ullmann and fond a few possible hits associated with other U-boats. But alas, no ranks given so still in the dark. There were not that many servicemen with that surname in the Kriegsmarine so I am still hoping to figure out who this is and where he served. Thanks again, Scott

I meant to say "may have served on U96". He may well not have, but I am trying to see if it is even within the realm of possibility before digging further. Thanks, Scott

Hello, I may have an item belonging to someone that served on U-96. I have a last name and rank (Lt. zur See Ullmann) and I know that he lived in Wilhelmshavn after the war and was still alive as of 2010. I do not have his first name, however. I realize that there is a Lt. Ullmann in the TV-series Das Boot and of course that is a fictionalized character. I am just wondering if there are
