Thanks for the reply and the info. I can't seem to find anything regarding signaling on the WWI U boats. It seems that they were used on the Hunley. I wonder if it is possible that they were also used on the WWI era subs before electrical systems and batteries were widely in use.

Does anyone know if either WWI or WWII u boats had oil or kerosene lanterns on board? Particularly ones with red lenses. I have heard that lanterns were used on early u boat conning towers as signaling devices and/or lighting. Looking to get confirmation or to dispel the myth. Any input would be appreciated.
