When U-200 was sunk in the mid North Atlantic on her first patrol on 24 June 1943, seven members of the Brandenburger special forces went down with her. Does anyone know what their mission was? Many thanks, Sid.

I was recently reading a Venezuelan history book covering the period 1933-1945. In it it claims that the schooner "Nueva Altagracia", sunk by U-161,was Venezuelan. Elsewhere it is attributed as belomging to the Dominican Republic. A number of other incidentals seem to lean towards the Venezuelan ownership. 1) The position of her loss. 2) At least one other Venezuelan sch

A Colombian report by the Intendant (governor) of San Andres and Providencia states that survivors of the Lebore and the "Crysler" (presumably "Crijnssen") were picked by a local schooner and then landed on the island.

I was looking at this site's details of the sinkings of Honduran vessels and noticed that survivors of about a third of the lost ships were picked up by schooners from various circum-Caribbean countries. Is this coincidence, or was recue by local schooner a common occurence in the West Indies? If so, has any work been done on quantifying the lives saved by circum-Caribbean schooners?

Thanks Jerry. That seems pretty definitive. The next question is, what effect would hand grenades have on a wooden hull? Would the concussion be sufficient to stove in wooden planking if dropped close enough? I have used grenades to stun fish in confined waters, but would a grenade have a significant effect on a wooden hull in the open sea?

Hi Jerry, Many thanks. That answers my question fairly comprehensively. It agrees in general with the Resolute's survivor reports. They don't mention the radio transmission, or even the possession of a radio, but they do mention that the captain hoisted the Colombian flag and that they subsequently came under machine gun fire (which is an understandable interpretation of 20mm cann

Hi Rainer, I offer a belated "thank you" for clearing this incident up to my satisfaction and putting up detailed information on the incident. My suspicion had been that the company possessing the Uruguay, although Argentine registered, was British owned. Cheers, Sid.

Has anyone got any details about the sinking of the Colombian schooner Resolute by U-172 on 23 June 1942? Six Colombian civilians, including a baby, died and reports by Colombian survivors at the time were therefore rather lurid. What was U-172's own version of events?

What reason did Germany give for sinking the Argentine-registered merchantman "Uruguay" on 27 May 1940, 136 miles from Cabo Villano in northern Spain? She would appear to have been a neutral ship loaded with wheat in transit from neutral Argentina, via neutral Spain, to neutral Southern Ireland. Yet a party from U-37 boarded her, set charges and sank her. Presumably the Germans

Hi Guys, I am trying to find out which Milch Cows refuelled U-boats operating off the Brazilian coast and when. Is there a master list of such refuellings anywhere? I have consulted "U Boat Tankers 1941-45" by John F. White and Clay Blair's two volumes oh "Hitler's U-boat War", but neither has the necessary details. Can anone recommend alternative sources?
