The Manchester Commerce you reference was sunk by a mine laid by SMS Berlin ex
German lloyd liner,in a mine field 20 miles off Tory Island. 14 killed including
the captain.
There was another ship by the same name sunk on 29.7.17 by U39 K/L Walter Forstmann
commanding.

Per Chris Heal in his book "SOUND OF HUNGER",a petrol lighter moored along
side of UC70 exploded when hit by a salvo from the British monitors that
caused UC70 to sink. UC16 was also slightly damaged.

Thanks for shining much needed light on ANTINOUS, Oliver.
Turns out the entry date of the meeting with U38 was on 1.10.16 instead of 1.09.16. typo?

Michael,
Are you ignoring the listing of ANTINOUS in the damaged section of
Lloyds' War Losses? Sometimes the attacker didn't know he damaged the prey.

Hi Everyone,
On 2 Sept. 1916 the steamer ANTINOUS was attacked and damaged by U38
K/Lt Max Valentiner commanding. The steamer is listed in the damaged section of Lloyd's war losses on page 247. She ia also listed in U38's KTB
as steam unidentified on 2 Sept.1916.
ANTONOUS should be listed in U38's successes as (D) damaged.

There were women and children in Tokyo, Kobe, Hiroshima and Nagasaki. I'm sure that there were women and children in Berlin,Hamburg,Dresden and Mainz.
They were at Wounded Knee and My Lai. The women were in Burqas in Kabul
and Kandahar. Many more were killed at Stalingrad,Moscow and Leningrad.
Whether in comic books or history books, we must never forget,

16. Re: U 35 in 1918
Chris,
Looking eagerly to the release of the book. Why did you choose the Gerth brothers
to write about? There were other brothers that both became uboat commanders and
were or are more well known.

RETRACTION
Stollenz NEVER served on SMS von der Tann! I confused Stollenz with
two other officers who in fact did serve on that ship at Jutland, one of whom
WAS wounded. Utke and Plum are the officers. Plum was the one wounded.
Mea Culpa

Some how I left out the most interesting part of Stollenz's life.
While serving as II torpedo officer on SMS von der Tann during the
"death ride" in Battle of Jutland, was injured by enemy fire. He was
the only officer to be hurt on von der Tann.

Chris you'll notice that a great many served in WWII
and attained flag admiral rank. An equal number lesser
ranks and some very high rank in the Luftwaffe.
Extremely dedicated and patriotic men!

25. Re: U25
The Commanders list contains many commanders that made ZERO patrols.
It is not consistant. When the list omits the men that surrendered the uboats
to the Brits on a dangerous war time mission ( remember the Armistice had not
been signed and a state of war still exists) It is a great disserve. They DID
sail across the North Sea. What is needed is a definition of a the word
Commander. I tata

27. U25
Looks like U25 had three combat patrols in the first half of 1915 and
never used again during the war. Was she used as a school boat?
I ask because have found KptLt Emil Heusinger von Waldegg ,born
22 Oct. 1880 and died 8 Dec. 1966 at Bad Godesberg. He was
Commander of U25 from 23 Oct. 1917 to 29 Dec. 1917. Should he
be added to the Commanders list? If not ,why not.
Respectfully,

Thank-you for posting the list of the men that died on U154.
I see that the 8 men that died in the gun duel with Bombala
are listed. The doctor, Otto Hofmann, is listed but no inducation
that he was transferred from U153. The four (4) sailors also
transferred to U154 are probably listed but not identified.
Which ones are they? And shouldn't SubLt Eric Hugh Allen
PoW be listed as killed

Bombala did inflict a certain amount of punishment on one of the German Boats.
U154 suffered an explosion on its deck, probably from a splinter from one of
Bombala shells igniting a German shell, resulting in the death of eight
German submariners and seriously wounding five more. The battle lasted
2 1/2 hours. U153 had a doctor on board on this cruise and U154 requested
the doctor be transfer
