I apologize for trying to help or looking for a different avenue to a solution. No need to be condensing or rude.

Another possibility is that it was someone with a name that looked similar due to the typewriter and paper used, such as Heinz Barth who was a Funk Maat on U-123. I looked it up in Gannon's "Operation Drumbeat", but there it just says that the only casualty U-123 suffered was one of the control room crew due to the incident described in the OP.

There is another, but unlikely answer to this: Bastl or Basti is sometimes used as a nickname for Sebastian and some other names. It might be just that Hardegen was comfortable or close enough to his crew that he used the nicknames instead of the 'real' names.

Ken is right. The best way might be the WASt. But beware that at the moment the turn around time is between 4 - 10 month depending on the details you are looking for and the amound of files they have to go through.

There is, what seems to be the number "9" painted on the conning tower. This would make it a pre-war picture of U-9, I believe. As far as who exactly this Kaleun is, my guess would be either Guenther Looff or Werner von Schmidt.

Hi there! It is probably not U-2512. U-2512 was scuttled by its crew just off Eckernfoerde in May.
