Another possibility is that it was someone with a name that looked similar due to the typewriter and paper used, such as Heinz Barth who was a Funk Maat on U-123.
I looked it up in Gannon's "Operation Drumbeat", but there it just says that the only casualty U-123 suffered was one of the control room crew due to the incident described in the OP.
