On the website page giving details of the Iron Cross,in the section on Decorations, there is a picture of Hitler congratulating the officers of U-29 at the Ubootstützpunkt in Wilhelmshaven on September 27, 1939 on sinking HMS Courageous. I am desperately seeking a decent scan of this photograph. Does anyone have the photo, or a decent scan of it, or know who owns it, please. Tony Colvin

Bruce Dennis is correct about the fears of secret U-boat refuelling bases. For example on September 12, 1939, Sidney Cotton took Lockheed 12A G-AFTL belonging to Winterbotham's Secret Intelligence Service (SIS) on an illegal photo reconnaissance (PR) sortie along the coast of Ireland to establish whether preparations were in hand for the Irish Free State to refuel U-boats. Since posting I have looked up the Nordmark and it closely resembles the US Prairie. So it looks as if Beaver is incorrect. But I wonder about his source for the Bismarck's refuelling by US tankers.

There are Bundesarchiv photos, numbers 86MW/4285/31 and 32, which were published in Paul Beaver's 'U-Boats in the Atlantic", and show U-107 and other U-Boats refuelling from the US Tanker Prairie.
