Thanks guys good news is I went to the local library and inquired about the book and it turned out they had a copy out the back of the library in the stack. So I have got it in my hands now I sure was surprised to see just how close to NZ this boat got and how much time it spent in NZ waters! all the best Dave ps: i have found a place that sells the books for aus$26 or so.

Thanks guys. I live in Christchurch, New Zealand. I am going to pop into my local library see if there is a copy of either books to be found. I dont think my chances are high as I know the naval section there well and the u boat books by heart and do not recall seeing these books. Had a look on amazon and they had "U boat far from home" but it is US $85 or so! Looks like a very good

Thank you for your comprehensive reply Paul! Where did you source this information? I have heard that there is a book written by one of the crew of U-862 about this patrol: have you heard of such a book? I would like to track it down. many thanks once again Dave

I was talking to somebody and he thought that during WW2 a U boat came near New Zealand. I have not heard of this before. I know one of the Germans Auxiliary Cruisers came very close to New Zealand and laid mines off Auckland harbour but I have not heard about a U boat, and I think a U boat went close to Australia but i dont think it got near to NZ. Does anyone here know if a U boat did
