Thanks MPC yes all good down here in the land of the long white cloud; hope all is well with you. I am making my way through the books you recommended to me! I understand now: the cease hostilities was a German directive only. pretty much clears it all up cheers once again Dave

I have just finished reading "Iron Coffins" by Herbert Werner, and towards the end of the book he talks about U boats still being sunk by the allies in the days immediately after the war had finishd. I had a look at the "U boat fates" section on this sight and indeed this seems to be true: U-boats lost at sea after May 4, 1945 Boat Date Crew Dead

I have read U-977's KL Heinz Schaeffers' auto biography How close to the truth is his account of the trip of U 977 to South America? What is the agreed truth, by those in the know, of U 977s final mission? Im a bit confused as to where the truth lies. I read the book prior to finding out the amount of speculation that went on regarding U 977 thanks Dave

Hello MPC sounds interesting and an offer too good to refuse :P I'll send you an email asap. Can you read/speak German? Just curious as you name a lot of books in German text: if so I am impressed. My interest in U boats stemmed from learning about U 862 and New Zealand, however the more I find out about U boats, their history and that of their crews; well the more I want to kno

I have a copy of the 1952 book: so are you saying that there is a lot of 'story telling" by Schaeffer and that the 66 day run is not true?

greetings from Neuseeland MPC Thanks for the information regarding the books. About Canaris: wasn't he a rather murky figure in WW2? I will do some research. I am quite fortunate that I work in one of new zealands largest second hand bookstores, Smiths Books I have managed to pick up quite a few 'goodies' over the years: several old copies of Mein Kampf, books on auxil

sounds odd to me: for starters the Knights Cross was an across the board award, so to speak, so all german servicemen were eligible regardless of their position etc.

Ok I am sorry if this comes across as a little silly and uninformed BUT I have tried to answer these questions myself and have not been successful: 1. Minesweepers: how exactly did they detect mines in the sea? radar? sonar? vison? when they detected a mine, how did they go about getting rid of it? Did they blow it up somehow? 2. Depth charges my understanding is that depth charg

Thanks for the replies guys, well it turns out I got confused: i was reading about U 251 and how it went to Kirkenes and for some reason I thought that Kirkenes was a town in iceland?!? Maybe they have a football team with a similar name? :P But yes, you are right: Kirkenes was indeed a U boat base right up the north of Norway. I dont know why I thought Kirkenes was in Iceland: my apologies

Hello all, I have been scouring the site for information about whether or not U boats operated from Iceland. Naturally, I know that U boats were in the area but I am sure i read somewhere about a U boat going to Kirkenes, Iceland, for supplies. I didnt think that Iceland would allow U boats into her ports? Does anyone know anything about what contact U boats had with iceland? chee
