I am wondering if any U-boat crewman or officers were ever sentenced to death as a result of offences incurred at sea; from disciplinary proceedings, such as court martials, inciting mutiny, or other offences?

Not sure why not - this is a forum on World War I, and this is directly related to it, though possibly not of personal interest to you...Where would you recommend I go? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- I'm afraid it's not exactly the right place to post such a message :-( Best regards Yves

That's interesting information. I didn't know that some of the prostitutes were actually regulated by the German military. Guess it only made wise sense to ensure that their young crews wouldn't contract much in the way of diseases that would hinder their attendance and operational performance.... Thanks, Ballast 'n Bilge

Was the Krupp Company involved in any way with supplying steel, iron or any other materials used in the construction of U-boats? I have just obtained what looks to be a fine book on the Krupp legacy but cannot locate that information in it...

I am interested if any of you are aware of what equipment, clothing, and hygiene supplies were issued before departure on war cruises to each crewman serving on British Dreadnoughts during World War I? If so, please let me know... Ballast 'n Bilge

Although I agree that it was a good movie, and certainly an offbeat and unusual story to tell, I feel that Peter O'Toole who played Murphy overacted the part, and got rather caught up in his own ego too much in playing the lead role. I found him to do the same thing with a number of his other movies as well. Regards, Dave the Rocket Man

Was there any one occupied port on the French coast that was a favorite of the majority of U-boat crews?

I am very interested in finding out what each U-boat crewman recieved as standard issue before setting out on a cruise, particularly such items as personal hygiene products, apparel, and the like, if anyone has anything to share on this? Regards, Ballast 'n Bilge

Excellent information and plenty of it! Thanks for taking the time to educate me about the ins and outs of these subs' ventilation system. I didn't realize the level of complexity that the designers of this system had to build into these tubs to ensure good air flow and such. Cheers, Ballast 'n Bilge

Thanks for that very interesting reply. I didn't know that the Americans used a similar approach in strategy with their subs in the Pacific. Cheers, Ballast 'n Bilge

Are there any good models of the Bismarck and/or other German Warships that can be purchased? I would like to get a model, ideally of the Bismarck, to have as my Great Uncle may have actually served about her for a while... Thank you, Ballast 'n Bilge

I am looking for info on what ports were used to station WWI subs at and what were these ports like and their off-boat living quarters? Any info or elaboration would be greatly appreciated. Regards, Mr. Ballast 'n Bilge

The Bismarck was quite a daunting battleship of its era to take on, indeed (to say the least...). I know she was sunk but by more than one British warship along with Swordfish planes armed w/torpedos...it took a number of ships in several different formations to polish her off. In your estimation, did the British have any battleship at the time that could have successfully stood up and sunk the G

I am interested in obtaining first-person accounts of what it was like to serve on the Battleship Bismarck, whether as an officer and/or as a regular crewman. Are there any good accounts out there, i.e., books on the subject that really relate what it was like to serve on the Bismarck? This is a topic of great interest to me for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is the possibility that

I am wondering what the U-boat crewman and officers watch jackets were made out of and how effective they actually were in repelling sea water and moisture? Anyone know?

I am curious about what type of side arms and other hand-carried weapons were aboard U-boats as standard issue. I know that the captain sported a pistol (whas it a Luger?), but did they carry any submachine guns and/or other hand carry weaponry aboard customarily? Balast'n Bilge Boy

I am curious about how the ventilation system worked in U-boats...I have read submariners and other writers describe the stink and dirty air of a u-boat and its odiferous crew...sounds pretty horrible. How did the ventilation system, such as it was, work? Balast 'n Bilge

I am curious to know from you experts if there were any high ranking officers, from any of the Reich's forces, aboard during U-boat war cruises...If so, what type of folks were they and what were they doing there? Whoever they were, they must have had to adjust to all the restrictive space, danger, and stink aboard, me thinks... Yours, Balast 'n Bilge

I wonder what you thought of the Movie "the Hunt for Red Cctober" about a disgruntled Captain serving the Soviet Union and part of his crew attempting to defect with their submarine. Sean Connery played the Captain...I found it a good flick, though I felt Alec Baldwin was woefully miscast as the American officer charged with bringing the sub and its crew in safely... What did you thi
