Pistols and Other Hand Carry Weaponry Aboard

I am curious about what type of side arms and other hand-carried weapons were aboard U-boats as standard issue. I know that the captain sported a pistol (whas it a Luger?), but did they carry any submachine guns and/or other hand carry weaponry aboard customarily?
