On 05-18-1941 during tactical training in foggy conditions in Danzig Bay,
U-126 was run over by the target ship SEEBURG while surfacing after a deep diving test.
U-126’s hydrophone array malfunctioned and had not picked up the sound of SEEBURG’s propellers, leading Kptlt. Bauer to believe it was safe to raise the periscope to verify that it was safe to surface. He raised the periscope to do a 360° scan around the boat and that’s when the collision occurred. SEEBURG was almost already on top of him. Images 2 through 12 and 30, show the damage resulting from that collision.
