Oblt. Werner Gebauer was one of the youngest U-boat commanders during WWII when he left for his patrol with U-681 from Kiel, Germany on 8 Feb 1945. He was only 22 years old at the time (Busch & Röll, 1999). He brought his boat to Horten, Norway 6 days later (Busch & Röll, 1997). His boat was lost on the second patrol on 11 March 1945 (Niestlé, 1998).
