Notes

Michelsen began the war as the commander officer of the armored cruiser Prinz Adalbert before assuming command of German destroyers and torpedo boats in July 1915. In June 1917, Michelsen assumed strategic command of all German submarines operations, for which is was awarded the Pour le Mérite.

The ranks of Kadett, Seekadett, and Unterlieutenant zur See were renamed in about 1899 to Seekadett, Fähnrich zur See, and Leutnant zur See respectively.
