The British passenger ship Highland Patriot is torpedoed and sunk about 500 nautical miles west of Bishop Rock in position 52º20'N, 19º04'W by the German submarine U-38. HMS Wellington (Cdr. R.E. Hyde-Smith, RN) later picks up 169 survivors.
