HMCS Giffard (T/A/Lt.Cdr. C. Petersen, RCNR) picks up 43 survivors from HMCS Valleyfield that was torpedoed and sunk about 50 miles south of Cape Race, Newfoundland in position 46º03'N, 52º24'W by the German submarine U-548. 5 of the surivors later died of exposure.
