Career information
Peterson graduated from US Naval Academy in 1918 and from there went on to flight training. After getting his wings he served on board aircraft carriers. When the war broke out in Dec 1941 he was stationed in the Phillipines and participated in various battles in the region.
He commanded Patrol Squadron 101 (VP 101) in Patrol Wing TEN, U. S. Asiatic Fleet 1941-42, in the Philippines, and took command of Patrol Wing TEN on 9 January 1942 at Ambon, NEI, guiding the Wing's move to Java, then to Perth, Western Australia in March.
In the spring of 1943 he was ordered to Washington to serve as a senior member on the Aircraft Test and Trial Board. In Jan 1945 he took command of the escort carrier USS Santee (CVE 29). The ship fought in the battles for Phillipine and Okinawa.
Upon leaving USS Santee he was sent to the University of Kansas at Lawrence to head the Naval training there.
