ASW Trawler HMS Northern Gem (FY 194)
31 Dec 1942
As part of the escort of convoy JW51B bound to Murmansk, Northern Gem was involved in the action when the convoy was attacked by the German heavy cruiser Hipper in the Barents Sea. She picked up the survivors of the sinking destroyer Achates, five officers (including First Lieutenant P. Jones) and seventy-six ratings. Later on one of the officers died from the wounds sustained.
