Career information

Joined the Royal Navy in 1912. Served on Admiral Beatty's flag ship HMS Lion during the battle of Jutland May 31st - June 1st 1916.

Between the wars he was managing a tea plantation in Ceylon and it was there that he rejoined the Navy at the outbreak of WW2 in Colombo where he joined the aircraft carrier HMS Glorious with the rank of Lt.Cdr.

He was still on HMS Glorious when she, along with HMS Acasta and HMS Ardent were sunk in the Norwegian sea by German battlecruisers Scharnhorst and Gneisenau. He was one of survivors picked up after three days by the Norwegian fishing boat Borgund and taken to Faeroer Islands.

After recuperation he served on HMS Furious.
