History Built as Gisla, 1938 renamed Hellenic Pioneer. 1939 sold Greece and renamed Maro Y. for Yannoulatos Brothers (China), Athens. 1940 renamed Maro
Notes on loss At 18.30 hours on 20 Jan, 1942, U-552 began shelling the Maro and fired 126 rounds of 88mm rounds until the ship sank about 20.00 hours. The vessel had been in convoy ON-53, which was scattered in gale on 12 January and was straggling thereafter.
