| Notes on loss | At 19.08 hours on 28 Aug, 1942, U-566 fired a spread of thee torpedoes at the convoy SL-119 west-northwest of Lisbon, heard three detonations and sinking noises and claimed two steamers sunk. The ships hit were Zuiderkerk and City of Cardiff. The City of Cardiff (Master Robert Leonard Stewart) remained afloat, but foundered two days later. 21 crew members were lost. The master and 62 crew members were picked up by HMS Rochester (L 50) (Cdr C.B. Allen, RN) and landed at Londonderry. | ||
