| Notes on loss | At 08.18 hours on 15 Oct, 1939, U-37 tried to stop the unescorted Vermont by a shot across her bow, but another shot had to be fired before the ship stopped and the crew abandoned ship so hasty that one of the lifeboats capsized and several men fell into the water. At 09.37 hours, a boarding party went on the ship and placed explosive charges but when they failed to detonate a G7a torpedo had to be fired into the ship and some rounds from the deck gun were used to accelerate the sinking. | ||
