Notes on event | At 16.22 hours on 19 Aug 1942 the City of Manila (Master Alfred Sutton Reay) in convoy SL-118 was torpedoed by U-406 west of Cape Finisterre and abandoned. The next day, the vessel was reboarded by a part of her crew. Later the ship broke in two, was again abandoned and sank. One crew member was lost. The master, 83 crew members and eleven gunners were rescued. 46 survivors were picked up by the British steam merchant Empire Voice and landed at Loch Ewe. 49 survivors were rescued by HMS Gorleston (Y 92) (Cdr R.W. Keymer, RN) and landed at Londonderry. | ||
