History | Completed in July 1922 as British Scottish Strath for Tankers Ltd, London. 1937 sold to Norway and renamed Marit II. Post-war: On 13 Sep 1946, the Marit II on a voyage from Curaçao to New York with a cargo of oil, was caught in a hurricane, broke in two and sank in 35°09N/73°34W. The master, his wife and ten crew members were lost. 18 survivors in a lifeboat were picked up by the American steam tanker Pan-Amoco and six others by the American steam tanker Gulfhawk. | ||
Notes on event | At 00.16 hours on 11 Sep 1942, U-404 fired three torpedoes at convoy ON-127 and observed hits after 3 minutes 12 seconds and 3 minutes 32 seconds on a freighter and a tanker. At 00.20 hours, U-608 (Struckmeier) also fired torpedoes and observed one hit after 28 seconds. However, it is probable that only one torpedo from U-404 hit the Marit II. The Marit II (Master Herman Williamson) was struck on the starboard side in #8 tank by one torpedo and stopped, but continued after an inspection of the damage and joined convoy again on 12 September. She reached St. Johns safely on 16 September, was later repaired in New York and returned to service in February 1943. | ||
