At 16.30 hours on 11 Oct 1943 the Jalabala (Master James George Connor) in station #11 of convoy MB-50 was hit on the port side abreast bridge and #2 hatch by a torpedo from U-532 while steaming in fine weather at 8 knots about 12 miles west-southwest of Tellicherry, India. The crew of 74 and three gunners (the ship was armed with one 3in and four machine guns) sent distress signals and abandoned ship in the lifeboats after about 10 minutes as she began to settle by the head in rough sea, sinking by the bow about 25 minutes after being hit. Four crew members were lost. The master was the last man to leave and he rescued himself on a raft with six others. HMIS Carnatic (J 199) (T/Lt J.U. Webb, RINVR) was the only escort and dropped depth charges in a counter attack, but soon rejoined convoy without picking up the survivors in anticipation of another attack. The 66 survivors in the lifeboats made landfall at the nearby coast and were taken to Calicut on 12 October, but the chief officer had died in one of the boats about two hours before landing. The raft with the master eventually reached the shore and the seven survivors were taken to Mangalore on 15 October.
