| Notes on event | At 15.19 hours on 11 August 1940 the unescorted and unarmed Llanfair (Master William Evans), a straggler from convoy SL-41, was hit by one torpedo from U-38 in the stern and sank after 11 minutes about 200 miles west of Tory Island. Two crew members were lost. The master and 29 crew members were picked up by HMS California (F 55) (Capt C.J. Pope, CBE, RAN), but one man died aboard and was buried at sea on 13 August. | ||
