Notes on event | At 05.53 hours on 17 Oct 1940, U-48 fired three torpedoes at three ships in convoy SC-7 about 160 miles northwest of Rockall and reported two ships sunk and another damaged. In fact, only the Languedoc and Scoresby were hit by one torpedo each and sank. The master and 38 crew members from the Languedoc (Master John Thomson) were picked up by HMS Bluebell (K 80) (LtCdr R.E. Sherwood, RNR) after an inspection revealed that the tanker was beyond salvage and was scuttled with gunfire by the corvette. The survivors were landed at Gourock on 20 October. | ||
