History | Completed in March 1915 as Larenberg for NV Stoomvaart Mij Hillegersberg (Vinke & Co), Rotterdam. 1935 sold to Britain and renamed Helena Margareta. | ||
Notes on event | At 19.40 hours on 8 April 1941 the Helena Margareta (Master Owen Thomas Jones), dispersed from convoy OG-57, was hit by one torpedo from U-107 and sank about 330 miles west of Madeira. 27 crew members were lost. The master, six crew members and two gunners were picked up on 14 April by the fleet oiler Cairndale (Master Stanley Guy Kent) and landed at Gibraltar five days later. The master Owen Thomas Jones was awarded the Lloyds War Medal for bravery at sea. | ||
