| Notes on loss | At 19.58 hours on 29 Jun, 1941, the unescorted Hekla was torpedoed by U-564 and sank within two minutes. Seven men survived the sinking and spent 10 days on a life raft before they were picked up by HMS Candytuft (K 09) (LtCdr F.B. Collinson, RD, RNR) escorting the convoy OB-341, but one man died the next night onboard the corvette. The surviving 6 men were taken to St. Johns, Newfoundland. One of the men spent over 6 months in a hospital before going back to Iceland. | ||
