Notes on event | At 16.27 hours on 6 Jan 1942 the Baron Erskine (Master George Sharp Cumming), a straggler from station #31 in convoy SC-62 since 1 January due to bad coal, was hit by two torpedoes from U-701 and sank slowly about 360 miles east-southeast of Cape Farewell. The U-boat surfaced after the attack and the Germans questioned the survivors, counting 34 men on one lifeboat and several rafts. They apparently misunderstood the name of the vessel and reported their victim as Baron Haig. However, the survivors were never seen again: the master, 33 crew members and seven gunners were lost. The ship was reported missing after reporting the last time on 2 January and was presumed sunk on 10 January in 59°15N/18°30W. | ||
