Notes on event

At 13.15 hours on 24 May 1942 the unescorted and neutral Gonçalves Dias (Master João Batista Gomes de Figueiredo) was hit by two torpedoes from U-502 and sank about 100 miles south of Ciudad Trujillo. The master and five crew members were lost. The Germans attacked because the ship was armed with a 120mm gun and was identified as Brazilian only after the attack when the survivors were questioned.
