History | The Palestine two-masted schooner Farouk was requisited by the Admiralty as transport vessel in 1940 and brought 200 prisoners of war from Mersa Matruh to Alexandria in December 1940. Later the vessel was converted in Alexandria to a Q-ship, armed with two hidden guns. The idea came from her commander T/Lt Arthur E. Lockington, RNR, who served on Q-ships in World War One.
Notes on event | At 10.09 hours on 13 June 1942, U-83 spotted HMS Farouk (T/Lt Arthur Esme Lockington, RNR) off Ramkin Island and began shelling her from a distance of 9000 meters. The ship evaded all shots until being hit after 15 minutes and soon caught fire amidships. The planned panic party had abandoned ship in a lifeboat, but the U-boat never came close enough to return fire and soon the remaining crew had to abandon ship in a second lifeboat before the schooner sank at 11.50 hours. The survivors either reached the nearby coast or were picked up by a motor launch and taken to Tripoli, Lebanon.
