Notes on event

At 09.37 hours on 24 June 1942 the unescorted Ljubica Matkovic was hit ahead of the bridge by one torpedo from U-404 about 44 miles east of Cape Lookout. The ship had been missed by two G7e torpedoes, the first fired at 08.53 hours and the other at 09.20 hours, but one of them apparently hit without detonating. The U-boat waited until the crew abandoned ship and then fired a coup de grâce which caused the Ljubica Matkovic to sink by the bow within 38 seconds after being hit at 09.57 hours. There were no casualties. The survivors were picked up a few hours later by the US Coast Guard patrol boat USCG CG-218 after being spotted by the blimp K-3 and landed at Morehead City later that day.
