| Notes on loss | At 17.40 hours on 27 Jul, 1942, the unescorted Elmwood (Master Edward Lewis James Herbert) was torpedoed and sunk by U-130 northeast of St.Paul Rocks. Kals misidentified the victim as Almwood. The 44 crew members, six gunners and one passenger (RAF personnel) were rescued. The master and 19 survivors landed at Freetown. The second officer and eleven survivors landed about 200 miles further along the coast at Bissao, Portuguese Guinea on 11 August. The chief officer and 18 survivors were picked up by the American Liberty ship Davy Crockett and landed at Capetown. | ||
