| Notes on loss | Between 05.26 and 09.20 hours on 17 Aug, 1942, U-209 attacked a tug convoy consisting of ships of the NKVD with gunfire near the Matveev Island west of the Yugor Strait in Pechora Sea. The tugs Komsomolec, Komiles, the barges Sh-500 and P-4 (by a coup de grāce) were sunk. The tug Nord was the only surviving vessel, which picked up together with the minesweepers USSR T-54 and USSR T-62 only 23 survivors among the 328 men which were aboard the lost vessels (crews and workers of the Pechora port, Narjan-Mar, some of them probably political prisoners) . Soviet reports indicate that many men were killed in water by machine gun fire, but regarding the chance of surviving in the ice cold water it is not very likely that this was done intentionally. | ||
