Notes on event | At 02.30 hours on 25 January 1940 the unescorted and neutral Biarritz (Master Johan Andreas Anderssen) was torpedoed by U-14 about 36 miles northwest of Ymuiden. She sank quickly and only one lifeboat with 19 people set off. 26 crewmen and eleven passengers, among them several women, died. 21 survivors and three bodies were picked up by the Norwegian steam merchant Borgholm, which sailed nearby and were taken to Ymuiden. Several passengers were sailors who paid off their ships and were on their way home. | ||
