History On 7 Sep, 1940, the Abbekerk was sunk by bombs during a German air raid on London. The ship was later raised and returned to service after being repaired.
Notes on loss At 04.48 hours on 25 Aug, 1942, the unescorted Abbekerk (Master C. Wijker) was hit on the starboard side by one of three torpedos from U-604, which had been chasing the ship since more than 10 hours. After 11 minutes, a coup de grâce hit and the crew abandoned ship in two lifeboats exept the first mate and a cook. The survivors set sail for Ireland and were picked up three days later by the HMS Wallflower (K 44), which was escorting the convoy ON-122. The corvette distributed the men on several ships in the convoy, 18 of them were transferred to the Dutch merchant Jan van Goyen
