| Notes on loss | At 23.13 hours on 27 Jan, 1940, the neutral and unescorted Hosanger (Master Adrian Bjaarstad) was hit in the stern by one G7a torpedo from U-20 15 miles southeast of Copinsay Light. The explosion broke the stern off and caused the ship to sink within two minutes. The only survivor, Magnus Sandvik, managed to reach a raft with four others, but his shipmates froze to death while he was picked up after about 15 hours by the armed boarding vessel HMS Northern Reward. A line was thrown down on him, but he was not able to fasten it around himself, so a sailor jumped overboard to assist. He was then transferred to HMS Maori (F 24) and taken to a hospital in Kirkwall. | ||
