Notes on event

At 23.25 hours on 26 Sep 1942 the Yorktown (Master William Paul Boylan) in convoy RB-1 was torpedoed and sunk by U-619 about 550 miles west of Butt of Lewis. 16 crew members and two gunners were lost. The master, 33 crew members and eight gunners were picked up after two days by HMS Sardonyx (H 26) (LtCdr A.F.C. Gray) and landed at Londonderry on 29 September.
